Onigiri Bongo
おにぎり ぼんご
Perennially popular near Otsuka Station, specialty shop Onigiri Bongo pairs gently shaped rice that yields with every bite alongside abundant fillings like soy-cured egg yolk, seasoned minced meat, and salmon roe.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Handed over the counter, these rice balls feel noticeably heftier than their appearance suggests, yet take a single bite and the distinct grains loosen softly in the mouth. Rather than being pressed firmly, they are shaped with a light, airy touch and swaddled in crisp nori—nibbling carefully so the rice ball doesn't crumble is half the joy of the Bongo experience.
Among the vast lineup of fillings, a frequent favorite is the combination of rich, soy-cured egg yolk and sweet-savory minced meat. The luscious yolk melds with the seasoned ground meat to highlight the natural sweetness of the white rice, and generous stuffing ensures every mouthful catches plenty of filling. There are also classics like salmon, marinated salmon roe, raw cod roe, and pork kimchi; given their substantial size, choosing just 2 is plenty for a full meal.
When sitting at the counter, pairing your order with a bowl of soup, such as nameko mushroom or tofu miso soup, is well worth it. The dashi-rich, warming broth balances the gentle salt of the rice balls and brings the spread together cleanly. With seating limited to around 10 counter stools, lines often form during peak hours, but takeout is also available to suit your schedule. Payment is cash only, so having bills ready before stopping by makes things seamless.
